All Natural Deodorant Stick (that actually works)

Picture
Sick of trying DIY deodorants that need to be kept in the fridge because they melt at room temperature? Or leave you smelly 30 minutes after application on a hot day? Try this recipe!

This recipe will stay solid in a deodorant stick and has been put through some rigorous testing to ensure its ability to control the stink. These have included:
  • working 12 hour shifts as a nurse (which anyone who is a nurse knows that we run around all day, which can get one pretty sweaty, pretty quickly)
  • attending a wedding reception with 3+ hours of straight dancing
  • everyday use for the last 3+ months
  • as well as use on those hot, hot days!
Usually one application in the morning will do the trick, however on occasional days I have had to re-apply once more. NOT BAD! I even made my husband smell my armpits at the end of each day to give it a thumbs up or thumbs down on the smell test...good thing my husband is willing to test these crazy DIY projects with me :)

I would however like to say that my husband tried this recipe and was not a huge fan. Due to the beeswax in the recipe, it does have a bit of a sticky consistency. This has not bothered me one bit, however I do not have hair in my armpits. For men with excessive hair in the armpit region I can imagine that would not be very comfortable. So sorry guys, this one may not be for you.

**If you are NEW to NATURAL deodorants, here are a few things to note...
  1. Natural deodorants are NOT generally anti-perspirants. Sweating is one of the body's key methods to release toxins from your body. Sweating is NORMAL and healthy!
  2. Be prepared to have a PIT DETOX! This recipe calls for bentonite clay, which is a natural detoxer. Here is a blog from Wellness Mama about pit detoxing. When switching to a natural deodorant I detoxed for about a week - I mean straight up STINK! so plan to have that detox period. I notice using a natural deodorant that my food intake has a lot to do with my odor. If I eat like crap I tend to smell like crap! They do say... we are what we eat!

Ok enough chit chat lets get to the recipe...

What you will need:

small saucepan
wooden spoon
whisk
measuring cups
empty deodorant container

2 tbsp beeswax granules
1 tsp  shea butter
1 tbsp cocoa butter
1 1/2 tbsp coconut oil
1 tsp arrowroot
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp bentonite clay  (Optional - I have tried this recipe without the bentonite clay- I just used more arrowroot and beeswax and it worked great. If you don't have this ingredient you can do the same. However, the bentonite clay is great for absorbing toxins among other benefits)
15-25 drops of essential oils of your choice

Instructions (I apologize, I do not have any pictures yet)

1. In a saucepan on low heat, melt the beeswax (this takes the longest to melt - I usually turn up the heat to melt this, then turn it back down after)
2. Add the coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter. Stir Until completely melted.
3. Whisk in the arrowroot, baking soda & bentonite clay until well combined.
4. Remove from heat and  stir in your essential oils.
(I used 15 drops of Lemon and 6 drops of Valor because that is what I had available at the time, you can add your favorites)
NOTE: some oils are photosensitive and if you plan on having your armpits in the sun (ie. laying out at the beach) you may want to choose non sensitive oils.
5. Take an old deodorant stick (cleaned out & be sure that the plunger is twisted all the way down) and carefully pour your warm mixture into the tube.
6. Let cool completely, cap, and you are ready for use!
Yay you did it. Enjoy!

Here is the original recipe I was following: http://www.deliciousobsessions.com/2013/01/homemade-deodorant-recipe-with-rosemary-lemongrass-and-coconut-oil/ I did not follow this original recipe completely due to the fact that I didn't have some of the ingredients at home. I simply substituted with my own choices and it ended up working perfectly. I may in the future (now that I have the other ingredients) attempt the original recipe. If I do, I will be sure to let you know how it turns out!
